"Will my face lose fat after face massage?"

Face massage has a serious potential to help mould the face shape into a desired one but misused can cause unwanted effects. Accidental loss of face fat may be one of them (if that's not your desired outcome).

My interest with face massage actually started from wanting to lose some face "fat". I used to have quite different cheeks comparing to what I have now ;) Many adore chubby cheeks and associate it with looking youthful (having so called "baby face"), however in my opinion my chubby cheeks didn't add to my looks, instead they made my face look heavy and quite shapeless.

It is vital to note that first records on face massage come from Asian cultures such as ancient China, Vietnam and Japan. These ethnic groups tend to have thicker layer of facial fat and be more prone to puffiness and lymph blockages especially on the lower part of the face comparing to caucasians. Many Asian face massage methods I stumbled upon address issue of "fat" or "big" face, as well as flat, undefined features. These are common issues for that ethnic group however a Westerner should take them with caution because they can cause undesired changes to naturally different in fat deposits caucasian face (and make us look older as a result).

Here is a word of truth: Apart from incorrect moves and doing face massage too often or for too long at the time, undesired loss of fat will be predominantly caused by excessive pressure used in face massage.

On this forum person named KellyIvy uses a simple comparison to explain:

Think of your face as a balloon. When the ballon is full you see no flaws but if you deflate the balloon it's all creased. The massage is intended to remove excess lymph and fat deposits. As we age our cheeks begin to migrate down south to create the nightmare jowls . Excess fat and fluid fills creases in the lower face but make you look puffy and old. So when you're doing the massage you're reducing what fills the ballon.

It is therefore important to adapt the massage to our face on an ethnic as well as individual level (this is what I'm trying to do on my YouTube channel :) ). For example if after a period of time with facial massage you notice undesired effects, instead doing the massage twice a day as originally recommended, you can switch to only once a day or if e.g. eye wrinkles are your main concern - focus on that but skip some of the moves around the jaw if you don't need it.

A fellow colleage taking part in the discussion on this forum further explains:

Whenever you are massaging your face, be sure not to apply too much pressure as this can drain the fat from the face. Any baby collagen that retinoid or exfoliants help to build up can melt away with a heavy-handed massage. It can also create a hollowed look in the cheek area, but only if too much pressure is applied. The key is to stimulate blood circulation with gentle strokes instead of trying to flush out the fat with a kneading.

If undesired face fat loss happens to you, please do not panic. First thing I recommend is to stop practicing the massage right away. Within few days or weeks at most, your face should come back to it's at least nearly original shape if not fully recover. Only after some time you will be able to assess whether unwanted changes became permanent.

Yes, that's right, I hate to say, but some of the tissue loss due to heavy massage can become permanent :( Again please do not panic as this doesn't always mean there are no ways to help with that.

One way to do so are facial exercises but this would depend on the area loss of fat occurred e.g. hollowed cheeks would be more challenging to rebuild than loss of tissue on the cheek bones (which is what I experienced after Tanaka massage, thankfully only to a minimal extend). The channel Facerobics is a gold mine of different tested facial massage and here is a video of a girl I recently came across talking about how she plumed her cheekbones with a simple exercise.

Another way is to use products with Volufiline - a formula patented in France made of two herbal ingredients. One increases the amount of fat stored, another one causes the fat cells to divide and grow (full Volufiline results can be seen after at least 8 weeks of regular application). Below you can see the effect of just 1% Volufiline:

And here is an example of a cream that contains Volufiline that I used, it's by Korean brand V-prove, it contains 1% Volufiline. It's not overprices and it's available for example on eBay here

I hope this post was helpful, please share your experiences on fat loss after face massage below :)

Many thanks,

Olga
